Youth participation in elections in Kenya

“Many political parties in Kenya drive their agendas through young people, but post elections, majority of youth are left hopeless with minimal opportunities from their political parties.”

– The Centre for Multi-Party Democracy in Kenya

This is so true.

Allow me to give you an example from Nairobi County on the extent of youth participation in elections but limited allocation of resources in ation, Youth Affairs, Sports, Culture and Social Services.

Youth Empowerment and Promotion
Extract: Youth Empowerment and Promotion was allocated Ksh. 3.7 million only out of a total KES 2.1 billion which is just 0.2% of the entire budget.

From the above extract from Nairobi County budget for fiscal year 2018/2019, it is clear that programs which are specifically targeted at the youth are not getting sufficient resources for them to have any significant impact.

We’ll keep unearthing more evidence from various budgets around Kenya and beyond to prove our claim.
