Italian Football Federation president (FIGC) president Gabriele Gravina hopes the 2019-2020 Italian Serie A can resume either in July or August amid the COVID – 19 pandemic.
The Serie A was suspended indefinitely just like the other football leagues across Europe due to the concerns over the spread of Coronavirus. The deadly virus has claimed more than 21,000 lives globally.
Euro 2020, CONMEBOL Copa America and the Tokyo Olympics were postponed and various Serie A owners have debated whether the 2019/2020 Italian Serie A should resume or be cancelled.
Gravina hopes the current campaign can resume in June or August following the postponements of Euro, Copa America and Tokyo Olympic games.
‘’For as long as am able to, I won’t lose hope of resuming the campaign. I’ll do anything to make that happen. I find giving up very difficult.’’ Gravina told Radio Marte.
‘’I’m aware it’s too early to think of a date, but we must think positively. We’ll try our best to even play at the cost of even asking for support from UEFA and FIFA to go beyond June 30, therefore also taking advantage of July and August.’’
Gravina views cancelling of the campaign as something that would diminish the value of Serie A.
‘’I consider [cancelling of the season] as a defeat of mine and that one diminishes the value of the competition. It would lead to an unpleasant scenario.’’
After 26 games, defending Champions Juventus are a point clear at the top of the Serie A table.
