Ignacio Trelles Campos, who coached Mexico at three World Cups, has died at the age of 103.
Commonly known as ‘Don Nacho’, Trelles led Mexico to 117 International games.
He coached Mexico in 1958, 1962 and 1966 World Cups and was also in charge of the team in the 1964 and 1968 Olympic tournaments.
Trelles’ death was confirmed by former club Cruz Azul: ‘’With great sadness, but likewise, pride in being part of this club, we would like to inform you that Don Ignacio Trelles was added to the ‘Celestial Legends’.
Trelles managed Cruz Azul and led them to back-to-back Primera titles in 1978/1979 and 1979/1980 campaigns.
His other domestic title triumphs came with Toluca, Zacatepec and Marte de Morelos. He managed 1083 games in the Primera Division.
The Mexican Football Association issued a statement: ‘’We join the grief that seizes the football family for the death of Ignacio Trelles, legend of Mexican soccer. Prompt condolences to the family. RIP.’’
Cruz Azul confirmed that Trelles would have a private funeral due to the fear of spread of Covid – 19.
