Consent is everybody’s business
Notes:
- 93% of land concessions on logging, agriculture, oil and gas and mining among others are inhabited;
- 90% of community land and indigenous people do not have title deeds hence the need for Freed Prior Informed Consent to prevent possible violation of human rights;
- At least 3 people are murdered every week for speaking out on environmental and land issues;
- 3.4 million people were displaced economically or physically by World Bank Group financed projects between the year 2004 and 2013 indicating that there is a large scale engagement of banks on land-related issues;
- 70 million hectares of land has changed ownership through large scale acquisitions since the year 2000. This means that the land’s control was moved from local communities to businesses;
- 77% of human rights defenders murdered in 2018 were outspoken on issues related to land, environment and indigenous people;
