Barcelona and Argentina forward Lionel Messi beat Virgil van Dijk and Cristiano Ronaldo to win his sixth Ballon d’Or on Monday night.

Virgil van Dijk came second and Cristiano Ronaldo third.

Lionel Messi’s win was announced in Paris, France and was his first since 2015. He wins the award for the sixth time, moving him ahead of his longtime rival Cristiano Ronaldo who has won the award 5 times.

Luca Modric won the award a year ago ending Messi and Ronaldo dominance but not even a Champions League triumph for Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk could stop Messi from reclaiming the accolade.

Lionel Messi scored the winning goal as FC Barcelona beat their rivals Atletico Madrid 1-0 in the Spanish Laliga on Sunday. It was Messi’s 41st goal in 44 games for Barcelona in 2019. On top of that, Messi has assisted 15 times this year.

In September 2019, Lionel Messi was named the Best FIFA Men’s Player for 2019, with van Dijk coming second and Cristiano Ronaldo third.
