The Malaysian government has now unveiled the second tallest building in the world.

The 118 storey skyscraper known as Merdeka  is located in Kuala Lumpur and it will officially open at the end of 2022. It has effectively replaced the 2,073 ft or 632 m high Shanghai Tower as the world’s second tallest tower.

Once it opens, Mardeka 118, will have an observation deck, rental office spaces and a Park Hyatt Hotel among other amenities.

Burj Khalifa in Dubai is the tallest building in the world with a height of 678.9 m or 2,227 ft tall. That means that it is twice the height of Shard in London – 1,017 or 310 m tall.

At 118 storeys, Mardeka is classified as a ‘megatall’ skyscraper. It was designed to overlook the Stadium Merdeka in Kuala Lumpur – an historical landmark. This is a site which was used during the declaration of independence of Malaysia in 1957.

The tower has a sleek exterior and was designed by Fender Katsalidis Architects (Australian firm). The tower was constructed using triangular glass panels which was inspired by shapes ‘found in traditional Malaysian arts and crafts.’
