Sharing is Caring

A man who has lived with HIV from the year 1980s has been cured at City of Hope in California centre. The 66 years old man was cured after receiving a stem cell transplant for leukaemia. The curing was announced by the AIDS researchers on Wednesday 27 July.

The cell transplant was meant to cure leukaemia but cured also AIDS. This mechanism first worked to cure a patient in Berlin. The man has been on antiretroviral therapy (ART) to control the condition since he tested positive to date of curing.

The doctors said that the curing has opened up potential for other older HIV patients to get treated.

“When I was diagnosed with HIV in 1988, like many others, I thought it was a death sentence, I never thought I would live to see the day that I no longer have HIV, I am beyond grateful.” The patient said.
