Tanzania’s former President Benjamin Mkapa has died at the age of 81. He died in the early hours of Friday.
Mkapa served as president in Tanzania from 1995 to 2005 before handing over to Jakaya Kikwete.
President John Magufuli confirmed that Mkapa died while receiving treatment at a hospital in Dar es Salaam.
Magufuli has declared a one-week mourning period, during which flags will be flown at half-mast.
