Russian opposition leader, Alexey Navalny, has died in prison. He was an outspoken critic of President Vladmir Putin for many years.

 

At the peak of his leadership, he organized anti-government demos and campaigned against corruption in Russia.

 

He was the party leader of Russia of the Future. Amnesty International recognize him as prisoner of conscience.

 

He was awarded the Sakharov Prize for his human rights work. This prize is for people who have dedicated their lives to defense of the right of thought and human rights. By 2021, he had over 6 million subscribers on YouTube.

 

In the past, he described the ruling party, United Russia, as “party of crooks and thieves”.

 

In Aug 2020, he was poisoned using Novichok Nerve Agent. He was taken to Berlin for treatment and returned after 1 month abroad.

 

In Dec 2023, the opposition leader disappeared from prison and reappeared in arctic circle jail. On 16 Feb 2024, the Russian Prison Service announced Navalyn’s death aged 47.

 

In 1993, he graduated from People’s Friendship University of Russia with LLB. He later studied securities and exchanges from a local university and graduated in 2001.

 

In 2009, he became an advocate and member of the bar association reg number 43/547.
