In the 2022 general elections, a lot of female governors were elected. Considering the previous years, this was the year many female candidates secured gubernatorial seats. Across 47 counties, 7 are now led by female.

The following is the list and their counties in charge.

  1. Anne Waiguru- Kirinyaga county

Anne Waiguru garnered 113,088 votes to clinch to the governor’s seat. She also became the first woman to claim the seat in Kenya in 2017 general elections, under the new constitution.

She defeated her opponent Wanui Ngirici who secured 105,677 votes.

  1. Susan Kihika-Nakuru county

Susan Kihika scored 440,707 votes and was announced the governor of Nakuru County.

Kihika, who was also the Senator in the county under Lee Kinyanjui governorship.

She defeated Lee Kinyanjui who got 225,623 votes. In addition, the Senatorial race was also won by a woman, Thabita Karanja, under the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket.

  1. Cecily Mbarire – embu county

Cecily Mbarire was previously serving as a nominated Member of Parliament before setting her feat in the gubernatorial race.

She contested on UDA ticket and managed to score 108,610 votes that pushed her into the governor’s seat.

Her close opponent, Lenny Kivuti, became second with 105,346 votes

  1. Gladys Wanga – Homa Bay county

Gladys Wanga was among the candidates in the race to govern Homa Bay county.

The seat was also contested by Nakuru ex-governor Evans Kidero whom she defeated.

Wanga scored got 244,059 votes while Kidero scored 152,182.

  1. Fatuma Achani – Kwale county

On UDA ticket, Fatuma Achani clinched to governor’s seat after garnering 59,674 votes.

She defeated Hamadi Boga who was contesting on ODM ticket. Hamadi scored 53,972 votes.

  1. Wavinya Ndeti – Machakos county

Wavinya Ndeti won Machakos gubernatorial seat after securing 226,609 votes.

Wavinya floored her close opponent Nzioka Waita who got 129,181 votes. The senatorial seat was also won by a woman, Agnes Kavindu.

  1. Kawira Mwangaza – Meru county

Kawira Mwangaza is now the Meru county governor, after winning the hotly contested race. She scored 209,148 votes.

This was the year that Kenyans decided any gender has the creditability of leading a county. In the upcoming years, it will not be strange to have a female president.
