DAME Minouche Shafik of London School of Economics
DAME Minouche Shafik will become the Director of London School of Economics starting from tomorrow Friday, 1st September, 2017.
Shafik is an economist by training and has worked extensively in academia and public policy. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in economics from University of Massachussettts in Amherst. Later on she graduated with Masters of Science in economics and politics from London School of Economics. She then proceeded to University of Oxford from where she graduated with a DPhil in economics at St. Antony’s college.

Her research interests lies in trade and migration, investment, the economies of North Africa and Middle East as well as in the environment and economic growth.
She has taught extensively at Whaton School of University of Pennsylvania and Georgetown University. We spent 15 years working at the World Bank Group.
At the age of 36 she became the youngest World Bank Vice President. In 2004, she returned to the United Kingdom to work as Permanent Secretary at the Department of International Development.
In 2011, she moved to International Monetary Fund (IMF) where she took the position of Managing Director. She was responsible for many countries in the Eurozone and Arab countries which were experiencing transition. She was also in charge of IMF University which trains government officials every year. At that time she was managing a budget to the tune of USD$1 billion.
Starting from 2004 to 2017 she worked as Deputy Governor at the Bank of England. She was overseeing 475 billion British Pounds and sat at all important Financial Policy Committees. She was leading the Fair and Effective Markets Review which was tasked with starting reforms to rectify financial markets misconducts.
At the present, she serves as a Trustee if the British Museum, Honorary Fellow of St Antony College in Oxford, Governor of the National Institute for Economic and Social Research and the Council of Institute of Fiscal Studies.
Minouche has been awarded honorary doctorate degrees from University of Reading, University of Warwick and Glasgow.
