The former president was arrested over 2019 political crisis in Bolivia. She is being charged for conspiracy over alleged coup, ‘terrorism’ and sedition.
She replaced Evo Morales following a political crisis in November 2019.
“I inform the Bolivian people that Mrs Jeanine Anez has already been apprehended and is currently in the hands of the police,” tweeted Carlos Eduardo del Castillo, Minister of Government on Saturday.
Jeanine Anez demanded that she should benefit from immunity as a former president.
She was arrested in Trinidad, he hometown, and frown to the capital city La Paz. She wrote on twitter that, “Political persecution has began”
While held at the police barracks in La Paz she communicated with the European Union and the Organization of American States asking them to send observers to Bolivia to follow the case.
Justice Minister Ivan Lima, stated that Anez is being investigated for the wrongs she did while she was an opposition senator and not for the time she served as an interim president hence the call for immunity does not apply.
Morales resigned in Nov 2019 following accusations of stealing an election. He was the first indigenous president.
