Jaswant Singh Rai is a member of Rai Family which has numerous multi-billion interests in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. 

 

Jaswant Singh Rai  is reported to have been abducted by four men who used a double cabin pick up which blocked the billionaire’s Toyota Land Cruiser 300 in Nairobi. The alleged kidnap happened on August 25th along Wood Avenue in Kilimani area, Nairobi City. 

 

The sugar baron was released after 24 hours. Jaswant Singh Rai is the founder of Rai Group of Companies which has interest in sugar (such as Kabras), cement, cooking oil, wheat, soaps, horticulture and real estate. 

 

Rai Group of Companies have their businesses spread in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, United Kingdom, Canada and Malawi. 

 

Rai Group of Companies is made up of Rai Cement Ltd, West Kenya Sugar, Sukari Industries, Menengai Oil Refineries, Kinyara Sugar Works (Uganda), Rai Plywoods Kenya Ltd, Rai Holdings Ltd, Rai Investments Ltd, Rai Ceramics Ltd, Tulip Properties, Rai Expo Park Ltd, Tarlochan Singh Rai Ltd, Rai Produces Ltd and Rai Paper Mills. 

 

Rai produces over half of the sugar consumed in Kenya.  

 

Rai Group of Companies own land and properties in Kampala, Runda in Nairobi and Canada. 

 

Jaswant Singh Rai owns 40 percent shares in Victoria Community Bank (VCB) through proxies. 

 

Controversies

 

Jaswant Singh Rai and his Rai Group of Companies have in the past been associated with controversies such as the importation of mercury-poisoned sugar into Kenya. He is also alleged to have financed Raila Odinga presidential bid to a tune of Ksh. 2 billion through Muhoho Kenyatta.
