During labor day, Kisumu County governor, Professor Anyang Nyong’o s said that there is nothing to celebrate considering that his residents are battling with floods and high cost of of living.

 

Overflow from Lake Victoria and swollen rivers like Nyando have affected 14,060 people across 8 sub counties. One person drowned in Muhoroni Sub County.

 

Flooding has been reported in Nyakachi, Nyando, Kisumu Central, Kadipor and Kisumu East. A total of 22 ECDE schools cannot reopen soon due to flooding as follows Kadipor (7), Nyando (3), Kisumu West (2), K Central (1), Seme (3), Kisumu East (5) and Nyakach (1).

 

Healthcare facilities too affected. The floods affected the main water treatment plant by KIWASCO. The County government is working with the water company to contain the situation.

 

A total of Ksh. 4.8 million used to purchase food and non-food items. Government appeals to well wishers to help by sending donations, food and non-food items to Kisumu County.

 

Judith Abonyo of PublicProfessor Anyang Nyong'o Service said that there will be a donation center that will be at Jaramogi Oginga Sports Complex and there will also be a county emergency account.

Nyong’o said national and county governments to coordinate responses to flooding. He asked people living in vulnerable areas to relocate. However, the governor did say where the people can relocate to.

 

When government asks people to relocate to safer grounds, they should provide alternatives for those who cannot afford the relocation process.
