The first report has been presented to the parliament by the Ethiopian human Rights Commission (EHRC).
The commission said that the issues stated in the report were acquired through monitoring and investigation of the activities that took place in the 2021/22.
In the report, the commission identifies the human rights that have been violated due to the developing factors and current situation of the country. The report also reminds that solutions must be found to the conflicts and attacks against civilians in the past one year.
Considering the issues stated by the report, the violence that occurred in northern Ethiopia, In Tigray, Amhara and Afar regions to be specific has been given more attention. The report has a detailed information of the grave human rights violation that led to chaos in the country. This includes deaths and physical and psycho-social injury, displacement and destruction of property, sexual abuse and gender-based violence. The violence spread across all groups of people in the society.
“All parties to the conflicted have committed serious international human rights and humanitarian law violations against civilians,” the commission said. The civilians who were at the active areas of violence were denied the human rights by the armed forces. The forces include those from the government, Tigray forces and others.
The commission not only fights for the rights of the civilians but also the rights of the members of the parties that were involved in the conflicts. EHRC says that these members are being subjected to extended pre-trail detention, beatings and treatment that is against the law.
From the findings from the EHRC, most of the violations were committed by the non-state actors. On the other hand, most of the killings were made by armed groups, individuals and non-organized groups.
The other parts covered by the report includes; the right to seek information and freedom of expression.
In addition, the report says that the civilians in drought affected areas are suffering because the government has overstretched and is calling for assistance from humanitarians from other countries.
“Though this first annual human rights situation report does not purport to be an exhaustive list of incidents of human rights violations, it provides a comprehensive overview of human rights concerns that require immediate and urgent attention.” Daniel Bekele who is the commissioner at EHRC said.
