Morocco has placed Tangier under total lockdown after rise in coronavirus cases.

The north-west city, which serves as a gateway between Africa and Europe, has seen new clusters of virus infections recently.

Both rail and road transport in and out of Tangier have been suspended and residents have been urged to stay at home.

They can only leave their homes in cases of extreme necessity

If one has to leave the port city, he or she will be required to have a special permit.

Moving around Tangier will also require authorization from the local authorities.

A total of 16,000 Covid-19 cases have been confirmed in Morocco, with the virus claiming 253 lives.
