The World Health Organisation (WHO) has declared Cameroon and Nigeria to be Polio free.
Polio is a crippling disease that usually affects children under the age of five.
Pakistan and Afghanistan are now the only countries with the wild polio virus cases.
The UN health agency will present a certificate to Nigeria and declare the African continent free of the wild polio virus.
Dr Faisal Shuaib, Nigeria’s head of primary healthcare agency, described the achievement as a ‘’proud moment for us and indeed all Nigerians’’.
Cameroon’s health minister Malachie Manaouda announced on Wednesday that the country has been certified free of polio.
For a country to be declared free of polio, it must ensure high immunisation coverage and prove that there have been no transmissions for at least three consecutive years.
It should also maintain a surveillance and outbreak preparedness system.
