Sharing is Caring

Canon Peter Karanja, the outgoing Secretary General of National Council of  Churches of Kenya highlight some of the challenges and recommendations for the extractives sector.

The Bible-quoting man of God started by pointing out the various challenges facing the nascent extractives sector in Kenya. He started by pointing out that there are too many legislations in the oil and gas sector. It is over-legislated. Secondly, there is a challenge of there being no structure for of training local communities to take over from foreign mining companies.

Third, there is no genuine participation in the development of community agreements.

Finally, there is no framework for compensation and relocation legal framework.

Recommendations

a) Advocate for consultative framework for communities to benefit from extractices;

b) The advocacy for the framework is extended to other areas where there is a deficiency;
