Sharing is Caring

Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas has called on the French government to reconsider their decision of ending the season prematurely.

Lyon’s appeal against ending the Ligue 1 campaign was rejected last week.

The campaign was brought to a halt last month after Prime Minister Edouard Philippe announced a ban on all sporting activities in France until at least September.

Lyon were seventh on the French Ligue one table when the season was ended. Leaders Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) were declared champions.

Lyon missed on a Europa League place after the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) announced that final placings were calculated on points per-game basis.

In his letter to France’s PM, Aulas said that French football would face an ‘’unprecedented economic and social crisis.’’

French Ligue 1 is the only one of the top five European Leagues to have ended its season. The German Bundesliga resumed on 16th May while the Serie A, Premier League and La Liga are aiming to restart next month.

‘’The Bundesliga resumed matches on May 16, Spain will resume matches on 8th June. Italy, Russia and Portugal have resumed collective training and England is working on a resumption after 19 June,’’ Said Aulas in part of his letter.

Most coronavirus restrictions in France are expected to be eased on 2nd June.

“Many developments and hopes are expected on this date, so that France can gradually regain a good dynamic,” He added.

“Could we imagine that 2 June is also a great opportunity to rectify the mistake concerning French football and to allow, with a health protocol used everywhere, a gradual resumption of training and, why not, a resumption of the 2019-20 season over the months of July or August?”
