Directive No. FXD/34/2007 notes that people traveling out of Ethiopia shall not hold more that Birr 200. 

This is an equivalent of KES 638 or USD 6 or Euros 5.5. This is according to a publication by the National Bank of Ethiopia. The  National Bank of Ethiopia is the country’s Central bank. 

The publication further states that Ethiopian residents should not hold foreign currency for more than 45 days since the date of acquisition. 

Any person found guilty of violating this directive shall be punishable according to the penal code of Ethiopia. The above directive entered into force on 14 May, 2007.
