Isiolo County is located to the Eastern part of Kenya. It has a population of 143,294 people according to the 2009 census. The county headquarters is at Isiolo town. The main economic activities in Isiolo include pastoralism, tourism and agriculture.

Major Economic Activities 

It’s clear that the county has prioritized the development of Pastoralism in Isiolo County with the help of development partners. For instance, the African Development Bank funded the construction of an abattoir to the tune of Ksh. 350 million. This facility has a capacity of slaughtering 100 goats, 100 camels and 200 cows per day.

There are a number of Vision 2030 flagship projects which are ongoing in Isiolo County. The International Airport is ongoing.

Climate

Most of Isiolo County is arid or semi-arid plains. The region’s main source of water is Ewaso Nyiro river which flows through the county.

Education

There has been low rates of enrollment of children in schools in Isiolo. A number of government agencies and Civil Society organizations have campaigned vigorously to change this narrative. Currently, there are over 90 primary schools, 11 secondary Schools and one tertiary institution of learning (St. Mary’s Secretarial College). Isiolo Boys and Isiolo Girls Schools are the most well known secondary schools in this county.

Healthcare Services

Health services in Isiolo County are mainly provided by Isiolo District Hospital and another 24 health centers across the county. In addition to that, there is a private health facility called Al Falah Medical Center which plays a crucial role in providing medical care.

There are numerous hotels and restaurants in Isiolo town to serve the tourists and travelers. The town has hotels such as Mocharo Lodge, Bonen Hotel and Moti Pearl Hotel. These facilities offer affordable rates for everyone.
