Italian Champions Juventus have fired Maurizio Sarri as head coach after just one season.

The 61-year-old guided Juventus to win their ninth successive Serie A title but were knocked out of the UEFA Champions League by Lyon at the last-16 stage on Friday.

Juventus beat Lyon 2-1 at Allianz Stadium on Friday but were bundled out of the competition on away goals. Lyon won 1-0 in the first leg in France.

The Bianconeri have not lifted a European trophy since 1996.

The Old Lady also lost the Coppa Italia final after Italian football resumed following an interruption caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Sarri was appointed Juve manager on a three-year contract in June 2019. He replaced Massimiliano Allegri and went on to become the oldest manager to win the Serie A.

Sarri coached 16 different teams in Italy’s lower divisions before reaching the Serie A in 2014 with Empoli.

He spent three years at Napoli before joining Chelsea where he won the Europa League in his one season in charge.

A Juventus statement read: “Juventus announces that Maurizio Sarri has been relieved of his post as coach of the first team.

“The club would like to thank the coach for having written a new page in Juventus’ history with the victory of the ninth-consecutive championship, the culmination of a personal journey that led him to climb all the divisions of Italian football.”

Simone Inzaghi is the leading candidate to replace Sarri following a successful season at Lazio.

Real Manager Zinedine Zidane and former Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettinho are also part of the names being considered to succeed Sarri.

Former Juventus bosses Massimiliano Allegri and Antonio Conte have also been linked with Juve’s top seat alongside club legend Andrea Pirlo, who recently took charge of Bianconeri’s Under-23 team.
