Croatian midfielder Ivan Rakitic has retired from international football at the age of 32.

Rakitic announced his retirement on social media on Monday.

”It is with great emotion that I made the decision to announce my international retirement,” Rakitic tweeted.

”It was a huge honor to have had the chance to represent my country, Croatia, at the international level and in the most prestigious competitions.”

He made a total of 106 appearances for Croatia, scoring 15 times.

The Croatian Football Federation (HNS) tweeted: “With 106 caps and 15 goals for #Croatia, @ivanrakitic says goodbye to the national team.”

Rakitic made his Croatia debut in 2007 aged 19.

He helped Croatia reach the 2018 FIFA World Cup final in Russia. They bagged a silver medal after losing the final 4-2 to France in Moscow.

Rakitic played for Spanish giants FC Barcelona for six years between 2014 and 2020 but returned to his old club Sevilla this month.

He won the Europa League in his first spell with Sevilla between 2011 and 2014.

At Barcelona he won 13 trophies – including the 2015 Champions League and four La Liga titles.
