Former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel has signed for Championship club Stoke City.

The 33-year-old becomes Stoke City’s fourth signing of the summer following the arrivals of Morgan Fox, James Chester and Steven Fletcher.

Obi Mikel left Chelsea in 2017 after making 249 Premier League appearances for the Premier League side.

At Stamford Bridge, Mikel won two Premier League titles, a champions League, a Europa League, three FA Cups and a League Cup.

Mikel joined Chinese side Tianjin TEDA after leaving Stamford Bridge.

He also had a brief spell at Middlesbrough in 2019 before joining Trabzonspor.

He made a total of 89 appearances for Nigeria national team, playing in two World Cups.

He was part of the Nigeria squad that won the 2013 African Cup of Nations.

“We’re delighted to bring John to the Club. His playing career speaks for itself and underlines his calibre as a player,’’ Stoke City boss Michael O’Neill said.

“I was really impressed with him when we met for the first time and he outlined what he wants from the next phase of his career.

“We spent four hours talking and he made it clear he wants to get back into the Premier League and finish his career there and hopefully he can do that with Stoke City.”
