Edward Lowassa,70, who served as Prime Minister (2005 – 2008) under the Jakaya Kikwete has died.
He died while receiving treatment at Jakaya Kikwete Cardiac Institute in Dar es Salaam. In 2000, Lowassa was appointed the Minister of Water and Livestock Development.
In 2015, Lowassa vied for Presidency against John Pombe Magufuli of Chama Cha Mapinduzi.
He was born on 24 August 1953 in Munduli District of Tanzania. He attended Arusha secondary School between 1968 – 1971. He proceeded to Milambo Secondary in Tabora for advanced secondary level education between 1972 and 1974.
In 1977, Edward Lowassa earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Fine and Performing Arts. In 1978, he joined the army and fought in the Kagera War between Tanzania and Uganda.
Later he graduated with a Master of Science in Development Studies from University of Bath in the United Kingdom.
