A total of 197 countries, areas and territories have reported cases of COVID-19 virus outbreak. World Health Organization is reporting 18,433 confirmed deaths and 413,467 people have tested positive of the COVID-19 virus. This information is as at 25 March 2020.
There are 1,600 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Sub Saharan Africa as at the same date according to an update by World Health Organization.
According to Dr. Tedros Ghebreyesu, WHO has provided test kits to more than 120 countries worldwide.
Dr. Michael Ryan, the Executive Director of World Health Organization (WHO) Health Emergency Program has indicated that states should now focus on trying to stop the spread of COVID-19. However, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has suggested that countries should hire more healthcare workers and identify facilities where patients can be isolated upon getting confirmed cases.
This pandemic cannot be controlled by the health sector alone. There is need for what Tedros calls “the whole government approach.” In fact, everyone has a role to play because this virus is too dangerous and it is “public health number one.”
“We should do everything that it takes to suppress this virus,” added Dr. Tedros.
