Riek Machar, South Sudan’s first Vice-President and his wife Angelina Teny have tested positive for coronavirus.

Dr Machar revealed on Monday that he and his wife, who is the Minister of Defence, had contracted Covid-19, reportedly after interacting with infected members of the Taskforce on coronavirus, a committee drafted to help fight the virus.

A number of Machar’s staffers also tested positive including security guards. Their names were not revealed.

‘’We are still waiting other tests and hopefully tomorrow, we will have the full list [of positive cases in the taskforce],’’ Dr Machar told a televised news conference on Monday.

‘’All our colleagues that have tested positive are in good health. From now on, we shall be quarantining ourselves in our house.

‘’All our colleagues shall also be quarantining.’’

Dr Machar’s spokesperson James Gatdet Dak said that Machar and his wife would be self-isolating at their home in Juba for 14 days as they manage the infection.

Both were asymptomatic and feeling ‘’fine and healthy’’, he said.

290 coronavirus cases have been reported in South Sudan, with the virus claiming 4 lives.
