The government of Kenya is seemingly overwhelmed by the surging coronavirus cases in the country.
Health CS Mutahi Kagwe said on Thursday that the hospitals will be discharging patients to go and recuperate at home.
Mr Kagwe confirmed that health facilities are full and since a majority of the patients are asymptomatic, they may be managed from home.
“If this is implemented, it would free our health facilities from congestion. We’re looking into developing home-based and community care, provided that it’s in accordance with World Health Organisation protocols, which we’re currently reviewing and domesticating in line with our situation,” Mr Kagwe said on Thursday.
The CS made the announcement as 124 more people tested positive for the virus, bringing the national tally to 2,340.
Designated national coronavirus units are overflowing with sick and asymptomatic patients.
The Mbagathi Hospital unit is already full to capacity. KU Teaching Referral and Research hospital is almost full.
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO) protocols, the ability of an individual to isolate themselves at home will depend on the type of house.
According to WHO guidelines, self-isolating people should have access to an adequately ventilated single rooms, with a dedicated toilet, hand hygiene and washing facilities.
