Sharing is Caring

Ugandan opposition MP Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, has said that he will hold campaign rallies despite a ban by the electoral commission.

Bobi Wine says that President Yoweri Museveni is using the Covid-19 pandemic as an excuse to prevent opposition leaders from reaching the voters.

Uganda will hold general elections in January next year and the commission has banned campaign rallies as a way of curbing the spread of the deadly virus.

The commission has encouraged all those aspiring for various positions to use the media to campaign.

President Museveni is serving his fifth term of office and is eligible for a fresh term. He has not announced whether he’ll be on the ballot or not.

Bobi Wine, who is the leader of the People Power Movement, says the reason for the ban on campaign rallies by the electoral commission was not genuine: ‘’No Ugandan should be fooled into believing that Museveni is doing this for safety of Ugandans. What Museveni fears is the people.’’

According to the Kyadondo East Consituency MP, the government is using the Covid-19 pandemic to prevent a free and fair electoral process.

The ban on rallies is a great blow to the opposition leaders. Radio is the best way of communicating with Ugandans but most radio stations in the East African country are owned by politicians of the ruling party.
