Eight American nuns living a retirement home in Milwaukee have been reported dead from Covid-19 complications within 1 week. Out of the 8 a total of 4 passed away within the same day. This is according to a congregation that runs the retirement home.
The first Covid-19 fatality happened at Notre Dame of Elm Grove on December 9 when Sisters Mary Elva Wiesner, 94, amd Rose Feess, 91 died.
On December 11, Sister Dorothy Maclntyre, 88, died. This is according to reports on the congregation website.
On Monday sisters Lilia Langreck, Cynthia Borman, Michael Marie Laux and Joan Emily Kaul died.
There are other sisters who live in Notre Dame of Elm Grove who have test positive for Covid-19.
“All CDC guidelines are being followed regarding the care of sisters affected by COVID-19 and to avoid spread of the virus, including wearing masks, social distancing and handwashing,” said the School Sisters of Notre Dame.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the sisters, their caregivers and families. We invite you to join us in prayer for all those affected by the pandemic.”
The spokesperson of Waukesha County Department, Linda Wickstrom, stated that disease investigators have been working closely with the facility following requests by the School Sisters of Notre Dame.
‘Given the extreme contagiousness of this virus, it is exceedingly important for congregate settings to practice basic protocols to stop the spread of the disease,’ stated Wickstrom.
She further added that the School Sisters of Notre Dame have been disinfecting areas where residents touch most, social distancing, wearing face masks and has encouraged frequent hand washing. All residents with the virus have been isolated and no visitors are allowed at the facility.
It can be recalled that on July 13, nuns died at a convent near Detroit and another 7 people died at the Center for Maryknoll sisters in New York. A minimum of 6 nuns died at Our Lady of the Angeles Convent in Greenfield, Wisconsin.
