James Truchard is the co-founder of National Instruments. The company supplies measurement and testing equipment which are used by engineers and scientists. It was established in 1976.

In 1974, James Truchard earned a PhD in electrical engineering from University of Texas, Austin.

In 2019, James Truchard retired as chairman of National Instruments. In 2023 the company was acquired by Emerson Electric.

Jeff Kodosky and James Truchard who co-founded National Instruments have been inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame.

The two developed LabVIEWTM Laboratory Virtual Instrumentation Engineering Workbench which is a programming language that has changed for the better the way scientists and engineers measure, test and control applications.

They worked at James Truchard’s garage to develop LabView according to news release by University of Texas.

National Instruments sells their products to governments, universities and businesses. The company employs 2,500 people and generates $1.36 billion in revenues.

James Truchard holds a bachelor’s, Masters in Physics and a doctorate in Engineering. All of these academic qualifications are from UT Austin.

Kodosky on the other hand is a graduate of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

James Truchard is a member of National Academy of Engineering and also a member of Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences.

 

Truchard drives an old pick up to work where he does not have an assigned parking slot. He wears a semin jeans to work every day unless he is scheduled to attend external business meeting. Truchard retired as Chief Executive Officer and President on January 2017. However, he still serves as chairman of the company until Sep 2018.

 

He was named University of Texas Distinguished Engineering Graduate. The billionaire has invested heavily on curing Alzheimer’s disease and he funds projects such as Oskar Fischer Project.
