Carlos Slim Helu is the honorary chairman of America Movil. He is the richest person in Mexico. They control Latin America’s biggest mobile telephone company known as America Movil. In 1990, Slim acquired shares in Telmex which was the only phone company in Mexico. Telemex is now part of Americ Movil.
The Mexican billionaire also has interests in construction, consumer goods, real estate and mining companies. In the past he owned 17% stake in The New York Times.
Fernando Romero, the billionaire’s son—in-law is the one who designed Soumaya Museum located in Mexico City.
Carlos Slim Helu and family own 76 percent of Grupo Carso which is one of the largest conglomerates in Latin America. The group has various divisions which deal with cables, automotive electrical harnesses, steel tubing, power transformers, cosmetic stores, electronics, music stores, restaurants, chemicals, petroleum, installation of pipes, housing projects, civil construction, infrastructure.
The group constructs roads, tunnels, water treatment plants, drilling of oil wells, constructs shopping centres, factories and telecommunication facilities.
