Veteran leader of Djibouti, Ismail Omar Guelleh, 73,  has been re-elected as president of Djibouti for the fifth term. He was declared the winner on 9 April. 

“Thank you for your trust, thank you Djibouti. Let’s continue together,” Simail Omar Guelleh said on Twitter shortly after the announcement. 

 

Guelleh has been in power since 1999. He was re-elected with 98.58 % of the vote, defeating Zakaria Ismail Farah.  

 

 

“President Ismail Omar Guelleh obtained 167,535 votes, which is 98.58 percent,” Interior Minister Moumin Ahmed Cheick told public broadcaster RTD early Saturday. 

 

Ismail Guelleh will lead Djibouti for a 5th term staying in power for more than two decades. He has become one of the longest-serving heads of state on the African continent.
