The United States of America is cutting trade ties with Cameroon over allegations of human rights violations.

The Cameroonian security forces is accused of violating people’s rights. In February, the US also cut security aid by $17 million again due to human rights violation.

Donald Trump accused Cameroon of extrajudicial killings and torture of her own citizens.  This was cited as a reason why Cameroon was removed from the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA).

Countries under AGOA are required to maintain a good human rights record. The human rights violations began in the English-speaking provinces of Cameroon after the residents started complaining of being marginalized and all the resources being allocated to the Francophone regions.

The government of Cameroon responded by stating that the US is not have because of the country’s close relationship with China. For instance, in February, China wrote off the debts owed by Cameroon.

The Minister further stated that Cameroon most exports petroleum and agricultural products valued at $5 million which the US “cannot do without.”

The US embassy in Cameroon made a statement and place the value of Cameroon exports to the US at $200 million in 2018. The Embassy further stated that an excess of 25% of those exports were as a result of AGOA.
