Globally, women gathered in various cities to send a message that he is being watch. The women were holding home-made signs: “The Future is Female,” “Make America Kind again,” and “Women’s Rights = Human Rights,” among other great messages were displayed.

In Washington DC alone, over 500,000 women gathered with a sea of pink hats. This was for direct opposition to Donald Trump. The protest was organized intentionally to take place on the first full day of Trump as a president. As they pretested, he was attending a prayer service at Washington National Cathedral.

Transport 

Protesters arrived in DC using various means of transport: buses, public transport and caravan. They started by gathering at the National Mall and commenced the peaceful procession along the Constitutional Avenue. They walked to Washington Monument and end the procession near White House. Over 100,000 people came by 1,800 buses.

Received popular support 

Prominent celebrities, lawmakers and human rights activists addressed the mammoth gathering. Gloria Steinem, the feminist icon and the protest’s honorary chair sent a strong message to the new administration presided over by Trump.

Gloria Steinem passed a message from one of the sister marches in Berlin, German. “We in Berlin know that walls don’t work.” This was in reference to Donald Trump’s planned wall along the United States and Mexico boarder.

The Women’s March was supported by famous celebrities such as Actress Ashley Judd and Scarlett Johansson as well as singers Madonna and Alicia Keys.

Background of the Women’s March 

The march was born as an idea of a retired attorney in Hawaii who wanted a few friends to join him protest the election of Donald Trump not knowing that the idea was a hot cake and it went viral. It actually became a global event. Over 300 sister matches were organized around the globe (over 50 cities).

Nairobi City was not left behind in these protests. The matches commenced on Saturday 21st January at Karura Forest.
