Sharing is Caring

The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) have been promoting the bottom Up economic model  and their main symbol is a wheelbarrow.

This political wing is headed by Deputy President William Ruto. The party’s rallying call is “Kazi ni Kazi”. Which in means “every hustle matters.”  Their political symbol is a wheelbarrow.

The Oxford-educated economist and public intellectual, Dr. David Ndii, has also been at the forefront in promoting the bottom-up economy.

Kenyans politicians should avoid saying “bottoms up” economy. That is something completely different. They should say “bottom-up” economy. Otherwise they run the risk of referring to Trey Songz – Bottoms up. This is a song which features Nicki Minaj.  Here are the lyrics to the song bottoms up for your information. The song talks about something else completely.

Recently, Alice Wahome – Member of Parliament for Kandara and a die-hard supporter of William Ruto – was asked on Citizen TV to explain what is trickle-down and bottom up economics. She would clearly not do that.

See the video below:

I urge that we engage on public discourse from a point of knowledge otherwise we will end up exposing our ignorance like one female politician did recently.

One of the top four issues of priority for the party is the economy. Education is not featuring in that list. It should be considering that even the major proponents of the party do not understand some of the party ideologies. The party leadership should consider holding a seminar or conference for members to understand ideas such as bottom up economy.

What is bottom up economy?

According to economic experts, under the Trickle-down model, entrepreneurs are given capital to create employment opportunities which subsequently lead to economic growth and ultimately, better governance.

On the other hand, the Bottom Up economic model proposes that small scale trade businesses builds regional economies up to the macro level.

This is purely macroeconomics at play. It simply means that we are looking at the economy as a whole.

I agree that Kenyan economy needs a transformation to solve the urgent socio-economic problems such as unemployment, high taxation rates and astronomical public debt among others.

Dr. Abraham Rugo clearly states that this bottom-up model is not new in Kenya. He further argues that there are already good policies in place, the problem is implementation.
