The United Nations says that 85 children have been freed from detention in South Sudan as part of efforts to minimise the spread of coronavirus.
Some 11 will remain in prison because their alleged offences are severe.
United Nations Children’s fund (Unicef) said that those children who were freed will go back to their legal guardians or parents.
Reports indicate that prisons in South Sudan are overcrowded with inadequate healthcare and sanitation, conditions that are likely to catalyse the spread of coronavirus.
South Sudan does not have a juvenile justice system, with many children are locked in jail with adults, often for minor offences
