South Africa’s president Cyril Ramaphosa has announced further relaxing of Covid-19 restrictions.

Restaurants will be allowed to reopen and serve a meals to a small number of people. Hair salons, cinemas and casinos will also be allowed to reopen.

Commercially-licenced accommodation facilities and conferences for work purposes will also reopen.

Non-contact sports such as tennis and golf will resume.

The decision is intended to save livelihoods of more than 500,000 employees while being cautious not to spread the virus.

South Africans commenting online were however concerned that the president did not speak on the ban on sale of tobacco and cigarettes.

More than 80,000 coronavirus cases have been recorded in South Africa, with the virus claiming 1,674 lives.
