Sharing is Caring

The South Africa Health Department as well as the Ministerial Advisory Committee are thinking of treating Covid-19 patients (critically-ill) using dexamethasone – a breakthrough drug.

A number of studies have show that the drug can save lives for those on ventilators. Deputy Director-General, Dr. Pillay illustrated the effectiveness of dexamethasone in suppressing inflammation.

The pharmaceutical company Aspen Pharmacare has indicated that they are ready to scale up the production of a generic fashion of dexamethasone. Oxford University earlier this week conducted a mass treatment trial and discovered that a low dose of dexamethasone reduces mortality among Covid-19 patients on ventilators.

Aspen is based in Durban, South Africa and it is currently the leading producer of dexamethasone in African continent.

The drug in question has been on the market for more than 6 decades now. It is major use has been on reducing inflammation.

“The Department of Health… has recommended that dexamethasone can be considered for use on patients on ventilators and on oxygen supply,” said President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa.
