Sir Ian Holm, English film and stage actor who played a role in The Lord of the Rings films, has died aged 88.

The award-winning actor died on Friday morning June 19 after suffering from Parkinson’s disease.

“It is with great sadness we can confirm that the actor Sir Ian Holm CBE passed away this morning at the age of 88. He died peacefully in hospital, with his family and carer. His illness was Parkinson’s related,” said his agent Alex Irwin

Sir Ian Holm was recognized all over the world for his impressive and rich career which included Alien, Chariots of Fire, Time Bandits, The Fifth Element, The Sweet Here after, The Madness of King George and The Emperor’s New Clothes.

Ian portrayed Bilbo Baggins in the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings trilogies and shared his love for acting with many people around the world.

Sir Ian gave a Midas touch to screen and stage and on the process won many awards and he was a darling of audiences, colleagues and film directors.   

“Charming, kind and ferociously talented, we will miss him hugely.”

In 1958, Sir Ian joined Stratford Company and later earned fame and glory through acting as Bilbo Baggins in the Lord of Rings and acting in Alien and Chariots of Fire among others.  

“Ian was entirely original. Entirely a one-off. He had a simmering cool, a compressed volcanic sense of ferocity, of danger, a pressure cooker actor, a rare and magnificent talent. There’s a great spirit gone.”

Sir Ian Holm was considered as one of the leading British actors who played an excess of 100 roles on stage, TV and films. He was the winner of a Bafta, Tony and Laurence Olivier awards.  He was also a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company.

Sir Ian married a record 4 times during his lifetime. His most recent wife was artist Sophie de Stempel. He had 5 children.
