It’s with profound sadness that we have learnt the death of Prof. George Magoha. 

He most recently served as the Cabinet Secretary for Education in Kenya. 

 

He was a renown scholar, public servant and doctor for many years. He passed on at the age of 71. 

 

Prof. George Magoha collapsed at his Nairobi home at around 3:00 pm on 24 January 2023. He was pronounced death upon arrival at Nairobi Hospital. 

 

Prof. George Magoha is survived by his spouse Dr. Barbara Magoha and son Dr. Michael Magoha. 

 

Prof. Magoha’s younger brother Prof. Richard Nyabera Magoha also passed away on Dec 6 in Texas USA. 

 

For 10 years Prof. George Magoha served as Vice Chancellor of the University of Nairobi (2005 – 2015). He also worked as a professor of surgery at the same institution. 

 

After leaving UON, Professor George Magoha was appointed the chairman of KNEC where he served between 2016 and 2019. 

 

On 1 March 2019, President Uhuru Kenyatta appointed him to serve as Cabinet Secretary for Education. He served at this position until his replacement by CS Ezekiel Machogu. 

 

Magoha studied medicine at the University of Lagos in Nigeria. He later went to the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and then Royal Postgraduate Medical School in London. 

 

In 1988, Magoha joined UON as a lecturer in Urological Surgery and rose to become a full professor in 2000. 

 

He was a member of many professional bodies. From Kerosi Dotcom team we say May the professor rest in eternal peace. Amen.
