Residents of Bwiti in Kwale County Proposals on Use of 10% Mining Royalty

All over the world, people get displaced from their ancestral homes happens to pave way for development projects. When Base Titanium started mining titanium in Kwale County (the largest mining operation in Kenya since independence), residents of Nguluku and Maumba had to be displaced.

A large number (more than 2,000 households) were compensated and/or resettled Mrima Bwiti Settlement Scheme.  These residents among many others around the country are expected to benefit from mining proceeds (royalties) as provided for in the Mining Act 2016 and its regulations. In preparation for these benefits, the residents of Bwiti had a meeting in 2017 to discuss what projects they would like their share to be invested in.
