Marcelo marked his goal in Real Madrid’s 3-1 win over Eibar in the La Liga on Sunday by taking a knee in show of support for the Black Lives Matter movement.

The Brazil left-back drilled home brilliantly to put Madrid 3-0 in the 37th minute.

It was Madrid’s first game since the resumption of football in Spain following a hiatus caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Marcelo raised his right fist in the air and dropped his left knee.

The gesture, which originates from NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick’s 2016 US national anthem protests, has become synonymous with the fight against racial injustice.

A number of footballers have made shows of solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement as football returns gradually following the Covid-19 shutdown.

Several Premier League teams have taken a knee in support of the movement in training and before kick-off in their friendlies.

Madrid, who played their game at the Alfredo Di Stephano Stadium at their Valdebebas training complex, went on to win the game 3-1 at full time.

Real Madrid will be playing all their remaining home matches at Alfredo Di Stephano Stadium to allow renovation work at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Zinedine Zidane’s side are two points behind leaders FC Barcelona, who beat Real Mallorca 4-0 on Saturday.
