Portugal’s top-flight will resume on 4th June, the league’s organizing body said in a statement on Tuesday.

‘’Over the past few days, various entities have carried out successive alignment meetings so that the recovery can take place safely and with all the protection measures that mitigate the risks of returning to the activity.

‘’It is anticipated that this joint work by DGS [Directorate-General of Health of Portugal], FPF [Portuguese Football Federation] and Liga Portugal will serve as model for the resumption of other economic activities, with the aim of professional competition providing an example of the good practices that this pandemic imposes to us.

‘’In order to ensure that the stadiums are strictly inspected and medical tests carried out on all professionals involved in the games and their organisation, the date of June 4, 2020 is set for the first gameof the 25th round of Liga NOS.’’

The Primera Liga was suspended on March 12 due to the global coronavirus pandemic.

The Portuguese government had initially given a green light for the league to resume on May 30, but the league has revealed that the first match will take place on June 4th in order to allow for stadiums to be inspected and all players to be tested for the virus.

With 10 rounds of games remaining, FC Porto are on top of the Primera Liga table, one point ahead of second placed Benfica.

Portugal’s Segunda division was cancelled with Nacional and Fierense promoted to Primera Liga.

There have been nearly 28,000 confirmed coronavirus cases in Portugal with 1,163 deaths connected to with the virus.
