The Roman Catholic church leader, Pope Francis, is looking into a possible visit to Kyiv in Ukraine.

The Pope also condemned Russian President Vladimir Putin for his launch of a “savage” war in Ukraine.

The Pope was speaking on Saturday 2 April 2022 when he arrived in Malta. He took the chance to denounce Russian invasion of Ukraine.

During the speech, Pope Francis never referred to Putin or Russia by name. He described him as “some potentate” who had started the threat of nuclear war on the world. All these were under the guise of “anachronist claims of nationalistic interests.”

“We had thought that invasions of other countries, savage street fighting and atomic threats were grim memories of a distant past,” Pope Francis told Maltase authorities during his speech.

The Pope mentioned that there is a possibility of visiting Kyiv but he did not provide any dates for the trip.

The Pope was invited to Ukraine by the Mayor of the capital city as a messenger of peace. Pope Francis also indicated that the war had pained his heart very much that he sometimes forgets the pain in his knees.

This marks a new level of criticism by the Pope just hours after Ukraine president warned of mines outside the capital city of Kyiv.
