Laurent Gbagbo is planning to return home following the outcome of legal proceedings against him at the International Criminal Court.

The former president of Ivory Coast is currently in Belgium after he was ousted from power some 10 years ago. His lawyer reported that the former president now has a new passport as plans are under way for him to return to his home country.

The former president is planning to return home in December 2020. He was facing charges against humanity as a resulting from the Civil war which broke out following his refusal to accept electoral defeat.

His rival, Alassane Ouattara, forced him out after a bloody civil war which is reported to have claimed the lives of over 3,000 people.

Laurent Gbagbo still commands a large following in Ivory Coast and his return has sparked fear of increased division.

He was barred from contesting elections by a top court in the country. This was because he was sentenced to 20 years in absentia for looting the Central Bank during the 2010-2011 civil war.
