Sharing is Caring

A minimum of 21 protesters have been killed in clashes in Yangon, the capital city of Myanmar. Meanwhile politicians deposed from power are calling for a “revolution.”

The military coup d’etat happened on 1 February and Aung San Suu Kyi was detained. She was Myanmar’s civilian leader and head of the National League for Democracy (NLD) party. Since then Myanmar has experienced protests only.

The National League of Democracy (NLD) party won in last year’s election but the military claimed that there had been electoral fraud and used that as an excuse for the overthrow of a legitimately elected government.

On Sunday, 14 March, the security forces opened live ammunition in the Yangon City while protesters used sticks and knives to defend themselves.

In aggregate, over 120 protesters have been killed during the military crackdown, as per the AAPP monitoring group.

Military crackdowns on Myanmar protests are reported to have commenced after protesters set alight Chinese owned factories in Yangon. These 10 factories most of them were producing clothing.

“Factories were looted and destroyed and many Chinese staff were injured and trapped,” Chinese embassy Facebook page reported.

“Take further effective measures to stop all acts of violence, punish the perpetrators in accordance with the law and ensure the safety of life and property of Chinese companies and personnel in Myanmar,” Urged the Chinese Embassy.

The United States government has already slapped sanctions on the top leaders of the Myanmar military and there are plans to freeze $1 billion worth of the  Myanmar’s military funds in the United States.
