Blocking the graduation ceremony never happened as envisaged by the tribal chiefs who think that Moi University is a village polytechnic. Police officers in combat gear were station along the road leading to the Main Campus with clear instructions never to let any politicians enter the graduation square unless they have a relative graduating. The main reason for that: they wanted their tribesman to be nominated as acting Vice Chancellor.

The Uasin Gishu governor Jackson Mandago and his Elgeyo Marakwet counterpart Alex Tolgos visited the Main Campus alongside several Members of Parliament and Members of County Assembly to demand that the son of the soil (Professor Isaac Kosgey)be nominated as the acting Vice Chancellor as opposed to an outside (Professor Laban Ayiro).

Under devolution we did not envision any role of tribalism. Having a university in a certain community does not mean that the community owns that institution considering that all public universities are funded by taxpayers’ money. Every Kenyan has a right to work in any part of this country. Let us all shun tribalism. It kills development!
