Bundesliga club Mainz 05 have sacked head coach Achim Beierlorzer following back-to-back defeats at the start of the 2020-21 Bundesliga season.

Mainz lost 3-1 to RB Leipzig in their opener before being thrashed 4-1 at home by newly promoted Stuttgart on Saturday.

Beierlorzer was appointed Mainz head coach in November 2019 shortly after losing his job at FC Koln.

He led Mainz to survive in the Bundesliga last season.

A statement on Mainz’s website read: ‘’Achim Beierlorzer has been relieved of his duties as coach of 1. FSV Mainz 05.

‘’The decision has been reached following a review of the current sporting circumstances at the club by Mainz directors Rouven Schröder and Stefan Hofmann and extensive talks with Beierlozer on Sunday afternoon.’’

Achim Beierlorzer said: “I’m disappointed by the club’s decision. Nevertheless, I would like to wish Mainz 05 and the team all the best for the future.”

Assistant coach Jan-Moritz Lichte will take charge in an interim capacity until further notice. The 40-year-old has been a part of the coaching staff at the club since 2017.

Mainz sporting director Rouven Schröder said: “Jan-Moritz Lichte has a lot of technical expertise, along with more than ten years of experience as a coach.

‘’He also knows our club inside and out. For this reason, we have the utmost trust in him to take over for the ongoing season.

‘’His new role will also offer the opportunity for Jan-Moritz Lichte to implement his footballing philosophies and to develop and make a name for himself as a leader.

‘’His development in this regard will be taken into account when we make a decision about the position of coach in the future, which will give him and the club enough time to evaluate our options properly.”
