Kenya’s flag was hoisted at the United Nations (UN) headquarters in New York City at 8:00 pm East African time, signalling the commencement of the Kenya’s 2-year term at the UN Security Council.

Kenya had won the seat six months ago but she is taking it up now. Kenya defeated Djibouti after serious lobbying to get the seat at the powerful global body.

Kenya now becomes a key decision-maker at the global arena on issues of security and peace. Some of the decisions include electing judges of the International Criminal Court (ICC).

Kenya is also expected to voice African position at the UN Security Council.
